Key Sites on This Journey

Masada National Park
01

Masada National Park

This is an ancient fortress on an isolated rock plateau. It tells the story of the Jewish rebels' heroism. It shows their desire for freedom, next to the glory of Herod's palaces. Archaeology reveals the complex limits between sacrifice, bravery, and the wish for freedom. This site became a national symbol of the Zionist movement long ago.

Ein Gedi (David Stream and the Ancient Synagogue)
02

Ein Gedi (David Stream and the Ancient Synagogue)

This rich desert oasis stands out against the surrounding wasteland. Here we will hear stories about the woman-loving King's love affairs. We will discuss the importance of love in religions, especially in Judaism. We will learn about the ancient 'community of millionaires' that formed here over the years. We will hear about the old curse they put on anyone who revealed their secret.

Qumran Caves
03

Qumran Caves

The greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century was found in the cliffs above the Dead Sea — the Dead Sea Scrolls. We will look at the lives of the Essenes, a separatist sect that went into the desert before an apocalyptic battle. Their legacy shows the many spiritual movements in the Second Temple period. These movements shaped early Christianity and influenced Rabbinic Judaism.

Kalia Beach
04

Kalia Beach

This beach in the northern Dead Sea lets you float in the salt water. It offers a very relaxing cosmetic-ecological experience. The mineral mud and the receding shoreline show environmental challenges. They also show the geology of the Syro-African Rift.
